A full kitchen remodel can often take months and cost you far more than you initially planned. That said, cabinet painting is actually a very budget-friendly way to get a dramatic update without tearing anything out or undergoing extensive renovations. If you’re considering it, though, you’ll probably want to know just how the process works and what it will mean for your daily routine. Here’s everything you need to know.
Start with Preparing Your Space
Whether you’re doing things yourself or hiring a team of pros, any painting can’t commence until the surfaces have been prepared. You’ll want to be sure your cabinets are completely empty, and your countertops are cleared off. It’s wise to move all décor and furnishings out of the space entirely, but if something is too big to move, be sure it’s covered with drop cloths just like your floors, counters, and appliances. You’ll also want to use painter’s tape as needed to ensure straight, clean edges.
Remember, kitchen cabinets collect grease, grime, and fingerprints over the years, and dirty surfaces cannot hold paint well. The cabinets will need to be thoroughly cleaned and often sanded to ensure they are as smooth as possible to help the paint bond properly.
Select Your Painting Method
When painting cabinets, there are two primary methods you can choose from. Spray painting is often recommended, since it leaves a smooth finish that looks brand new, and it can be done very quickly. If budget is more of a concern, though, the time-tested brush-and-roll technique can be used. It might not be quite as smooth as spray painting, and it’s certainly more effort on your part, but your cabinets will still look great. With either method, multiple coats will be used to ensure a consistent finish that also provides protection for the cabinets.
Finishing Touches & Cleanup
Once the final coat is on, it’s time to inspect every surface and touch up any spots that need a little extra attention. From there, you can begin cleanup—and if you cannot stand this step yourself, it’s one of the biggest benefits of hiring a team of pros, since they’ll make it look like they were never even there. In any case, the protective coverings can be picked up and tossed, any scattered brushes or paint cans collected, and any dust or paint spatter can be properly cleaned. From there, once your paint has had at least 24 to 48 hours to dry, you can begin reassembly. Just be sure you’re gentle with the cabinets for the first several days.
All in all, cabinet painting gives you a fresh, updated space with far less cost and disruption compared to a full remodel!
